POLITICAL AND MORAL DECADENCE IN VIJAY TENDULKAR`S PLAY ` GHASHIRAM KOTWAL` BY DR. RAM SHARMA, SENIOR LECTURER IN British, J.V.P.G COLLEGE, BARAUT, BAGHPAT, U.P., INDIA
Vijay Tendulkar`s Ghashiram Kotwal was carried out in 1972 in Pune.Whereever , the play was carried out it had been loved through the audience of various languages and cultures due to its sound and contemporary context.Within this play Tendulkar has presented Ghasiram who isn’t the historic figure but we’re feeling contemporsary Ghasirams who present political and moral degradation within the society.Within an author`s note ,Tendulkar states,
“This isn’t a historic play. It’s a story , in prose , verse, music and dance occur historic era.Ghashirams are masterpieces of socio-political forces which know no obstacles of your time and put. Although according to historic legend, I’ve no aim of commemtary around the morals , or insufficient them, from the Peshwa, Nana Phadnavis or Ghashiram .The moral from the story , if there’s any , might be sought out elsewhere.[p-586]1
Ghashiram`s progress from the common guy towards the animal may be the good reputation for moral degradation , social decadence and spiritual regression of guy. Grant Duff observes,
“No demonstration of greater neglect for an administration ,or more remarkable criminality inside a subordinate officer, is recorded within the annals associated with a condition compared to situation of GhasseeRam, Kotwal—-`[Duff :1987]2“
Ghashiram, an innocent Brahmin of Kannauj, involves Pune to test his luck .But he suffers unpredicted humiliations at Pune as he is wrongly charged with the robbery and , therefore jailed. He cries out his innocence but nobody learns him.
GHASHIRAM. I’m Ghashiram Savaldas from Kanauj. SECOND SOLDIER. Continue, move aside. The reason for here? GHASHIRAM. They`re honouring Brahmans. There`s a feast. FIRST SOLDIER. Exactly what does which have related to you? GHASHIRAM. I`m a Brahman too. SECOND SOLDIER. You’re a Brahman! Where’s your shaven mind? Where’s your holy thread? Where’s your pious look? FIRST SOLDIER. Where’s your holy book? Recite the hierarchy of caste! Inform us! When have you last fast? SECOND SOLDIER. Appears like a crook! FIRST SOLDIER. Appears like scoundrel![p-373]3
He was arreasted and insulted and Sutradhar shows the decadence from the cops within this speech “SUTRADHAR. When the police allow you to! Friend, the crook relies upon law enforcement, Sometimes they break your bones, Sometimes they crack your bones. Sometimes you lose your existence. The crook makes what he thieves. It`s easy earnings for that police. It`s a partnership. The crook is a straightforward crook. Law enforcement are official thieves. If your crook really wants to live. Towards the police he`s reached give. You’ll need protection money. And on top of that. Their whim might finish anytime.[p-376]4 He can`t tolerate this incident and decides to consider revenge with Brahmins of Puna. He uses revenge in various manner. They know the weakness of Nana , that’s lady. Ghashiram uses his daughter Lalita Gauri for his weakness.Nana has this very weakness he could be lured by girl.
“NANA. That idol of holiness? That holy Ganapati ? The producer of excellent ? Look, he’s two spouses .One about this side , one on that side. Should you take a seat on our lap , he won`t say anything.! GIRL . You’re like my dad. NANA. Only in age. But our devotion is-simply to this elegant image-Don`t loose anymore time .Youth won’t come again , the blossom won’t last.[He comes close and attempts to put a leg round her.] Oh my gosh, you’re just like a daughter to all of us-someone else`s GIRL [tugging back] I`m afraid NANA. Afraid ? But we’re feeling only love , oh my gosh.Oh yea ho ho, such shyness, such shyness[ p-378] 5
Ghashiram transmits his daughter to Nanasahab and she or he has caught his fancy.Ghashiram can also be there within the guise of the servant , and watches the responses of Nana Sahab .Nana really wants to touch Gauri , so he pats her soldier. However the innocent Gauri is embarrassed by his behavior and feels scared and goes out from just like a frightened deer and escapes after that. It’s moral degradation from negligence the daddy who would like to use his daughter to seize energy.Ghashiram again brings his daughter while offering to Nana. Nana dances with sensuously and will get themself amorously entangled together with her. Ghashiram watches it from the little distance and feels pleased to observe that he’s been successful in trapping Nana through sex..
GHASHIRAM [all of a sudden cries aloud] Now he`s within my hands -Oh! My daughter—The animal -[ Then yells in the audience] Oh! You people .Look ! I`ve given my beloved daughter in to the jaws of this wolf! Look .See this father .Putting the kid of his heart up available.[p-381]6
Ghashiram grabs energy at the expense of his daughter.
NANA. Suggest another thing. GHASHIRAM This is actually the best way .Otherwise the beautiful Gauri won’t arrived at this structure again. NANA. No, ! send her.I`ll cause you to Kotwal. When are you going to send her. ? GHASHIRAM . Once I possess the order , signed and sealed, within my hands.! [p-384]7
After attaining the energy of Kotwali Ghashiram does what he wants.Everybody obeys his orders strictly. “He has provided a order, that everyone need to remain at their houses during the night, they need to stick with their spouses , they married. And also the women need to do exactly the same, they need to sleep using the guy they’re married.Official permit is created compulsory without them individuals are not permitted , even going to walk out their properties.[p-173]8“
Nana is actually infatuated with Gauri however the hypocrite Ghashiram thinks that when he will get the energy over Pune , he’ll save his daughter in the clutches of Nana. Ghashiram`s unusual negotiating energy can seen here. “NANA. [all of a sudden brightening] Go, Ghashya, old bastard .We made you .We made you Kotwal .Raise hell if you want .However, you don`t be aware of methods for this Nana. This time around , you will find two bullets within this gun. With the first , we`ll fell your luscious daughter. However with the 2nd we’ll result in the town of Poona dance. Ghashya, child , you`re a foreigner.I’ve place you on Poona`s back .Why? Like a countercheck to any or all individuals conspirators .You`ll not have the ability to join them , they`ll never trust you even when you need to do. Because you’re a stranger, you`re an outsider. We simply elevated your dog at our dog to the positioning of the Kotwali. ! We’re your sole support.Oh! you`re a bastard, Ghasya.Your manner could be more arrogant compared to the Chitpavan Brahmans. You`ll manage the deference nicely. You`ll produce a court- . 5! No be worried about that. What `ll happen is the fact that our bad behavior is going to be deposited into your account .We all do it, our Kotwal pays for this.[He claps his hands.] The chance is available in the form of Ghashiram .Which luscious peach reaches the hands to become devoured by Nana.Excelllent ! Yes , Ghashya, be Kotwal .This Nana blesses you .[p-385]9
Ghashiram rules in Poona in the own tyrannical way.Innocent Brahmins are arrested .They confess the guilt , they haven’t done any crime His imposition of rules around the behavior of individuals verges on absurdity .He imprisons an innocent guy coming back home during the night around the suspicion that he’s going to a whore. The irrationality of his interrogatives is apparent in the ruthlessness he shows towards the Sutradhar who had been going during the time of night time to fetch a midwife for his wife`s delivery. GHASHIRAM [getting his neck, laughing] Idiot! It`s positive thing I caught you.Where are you currently going? SUTRADHAR Nowhere, my the almighty. GHASHIRAM To steal? SUTRADHAR No, Mister GHASHIRAM To whore? SUTRADHAR No, no, Mister. GHASHIRAM [slaps his face] Be truthful SUTRADHAR No, no, Mister GHASHIRAM Then where? SUTRADHAR Home GHASHIRAM Whose home?[Hits him] Be truthful Which whore had you been likely to? SUTRADHAR No, mister, to my very own house. GHASHIRAM .Then the reason for out this late? [ kicks him]Speak rapidly. SUTRADHAR. Mister, I would fetch the midwife. GHASHIRAM. Midwife.Who’s delivering? SUTRADHAR. My spouse GHASHIRAM How come she deliver in the center of the evening?[ slaps him] Speak up.[ p-389]10
One particular Brahman curses Ghashiram he would die without children .Ghashiram orders to chop from the hands from the Brahman and also to drive him from Poona. The town trembles at Ghashiram`s title
GHASHIRAM [ makes its way into removing moustache]. I`ve got the Kotwali and I`ve got Poona straightened out out! Each one of these hard , proud Brahmans are soft as cotton now. Nobody dares to appear Ghashiram straight within the eye. ! Now, after i look for a fitting husband in my darling daughter- that bit of me named Lalita Gauri -and obtain her married then everything would be the way I would like it. I`ll make this type of show from the wedding that no one`s tongue will dare utter one bad word about my daughter. And when some tongue begins wagging, it`s simple to find a lick when you have money , jewels and respect ! And my daughter`s beautiful -one out of million ! I`ll send my males out now to search for a husband and i`ll arrange everything.[Goes] [p-398]11 Nana`s look for new bride continues and that he works to get a `ripened bride` only for giving` an excellent large gift of land`Ghashiram was shocked to understand that his only daughter is dead due to a forced abortion and she or he was hidden in the order of Nana Phadnavis. This sudden twist of situation makes him right into a `wounded tiger` .He turns Poona right into a brutish city .His downfall starts using the capture of Brahmins as crook as he finds them stealing mangoes from his garden. He orders to push these within the cell .The cell is extremely small therefore the Brahmins within the cell can`t get enough air.Due to suffocation within the dungeon twenty Brahmins die and more start dying. Once the news circulate within the city , Sardar Phadke , the enemy of Ghashiram breaks opens the doorways from the cell and brings about the dead , the dying Brahmins.Ghasiram was accountable for the dying of poor Brahmans who die of suffocation. They revolt and demand to behead Ghashiram Kotwal .Nana obliges them using a thorn to get a thorn.
“SUTRADHAR. They beat him, They shaved his mind, They sindur-daubed his mind, They rode him around on the camel They tied him towards the leg of the elephant, The town of Poona viewed everything. [p-414]112
Ghashiram , in the mission for energy does not remember morality and responsibilities of the father. His rising to energy would be a major incident in the existence. His finish is really a tragic episode within the play. He accepts his moral decadence during these words,
GHASHIRAM . Struck me.Defeat me .Beat me more.Struck me! [ all of a sudden Ghashiram shields his face as though a stone hit him] Why stay to date away ? Seriously , you cowards .Still scared? I spit you.Defeat me.Seriously, beat me.Seriously. Seriously: Stone me , cowards, Pig shit! Seriously ans beat me .I dare you. Struck me .Look Body of my hands is tied. And you`re scared! Seriously, beat me.Crush me! [ The mob yells] Ghashiram Savaldas! Ghashiram Savaldas! I danced in your chests however i wasted the existence of my daughter.I ought to be punished for that dying of my daughter.Beat me.Beat me.Struck me.Reduce off my hands and ft. Crack my skull.Seriously, seriously.Appear! I`m here.Oh, that`s good .Vey good .[p-415]113
Ultimately I’m able to state that Vijay Tendulkar has presented political and moral decadence within this play.
